What makes a real Kantha stitch saree

Kantha is Bengal's oldest embroidery: a simple running stitch, repeated thousands of times until it fills a whole saree with flowers, birds, fish and village stories. Every saree on this page is drawn by hand, pinned onto the fabric and stitched at home by women who learned the craft from their mothers. A dense Kantha saree takes 3 to 4 months to finish, which is why no two are ever the same.

Fabrics we work with

  • Gachi Tussar silk — a textured wild silk with a natural matte glow, the most loved base for Kantha. See all Gachi Tussar Kantha sarees.
  • Pure silk and pure Bangalore silk — smooth and lustrous, for weddings and receptions. See all pure silk Kantha sarees.
  • Bishnupuri silk — Bengal's own silk, soft and light.
  • Cotton — breathable and easy, for everyday and office wear.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know a Kantha saree is handmade? Turn it over. Hand Kantha shows small, slightly uneven running stitches on the back, and the motifs are never perfectly identical. Machine work looks flat and exact. Read our guide on how to identify a handmade Kantha saree.

Why does a Kantha saree cost ₹10,000 to ₹20,000? Because it is months of skilled handwork by one or more artisans, on real silk. Our Kantha saree price guide explains it step by step.

What is the difference between Gachi Tussar and pure silk? Gachi Tussar is a wild silk with a natural texture and matte sheen; pure silk is smoother and shinier. See the Gachi Tussar guide.

Do you ship outside India? Yes, worldwide. Order on the website as usual. When your piece is ready, we confirm the exact courier cost (typically ₹2,500–3,500 for one saree to the USA, UK or Canada) and send a secure payment link before dispatch. Any customs duty is paid on arrival.

Is a blouse piece included? Most sarees come with a blouse piece. The product page says so; if unsure, ask us on WhatsApp.
