About this piece
Harin Kotha — 'the story of the deer'. Loveli Bibi of Nanoor, who has stitched Kantha for more than thirty years, filled this off-white Gachi Tussar saree with deer, birds, human figures and flowers — a whole folk tale across the fabric. It comes with a rust-pink embroidered blouse piece. Made over close to three months.

Why handmade Kantha costs what it does
A Kantha saree is not printed or machine-embroidered. Every motif is drawn by hand, pinned onto the fabric, and then filled with thousands of tiny running stitches by women artisans working at home in their villages. A saree like this usually takes 3 to 4 months of patient work, which is why each one is slightly different and why no two are ever the same.
Care
Dry clean only. Store folded in a soft cotton or muslin cloth, and refold now and then so the creases do not set. Keep away from perfume and direct sunlight.
