About this piece
In Bengal, a fish on cloth is never just a fish. It is a wish stitched into fabric — for a full home, a good year, a table that never stays empty.
Masuma Khatun made this stole in Bolpur, choosing the fish motif with the same intention Bengali women have carried for generations — the rui-katla shape that appears at weddings, on ritual cloths, in the everyday language of a state built along rivers. It is one of the oldest, most personal symbols in Bengali craft: prosperity, fertility, a wish for a household that is never wanting. She placed each fish by eye across the ivory field, then closed the anchal with a fuller garden — flowering vines, scrolling leaves, and two fish facing each other among the blooms.
The base is soft, breathable ivory cotton, the kind that softens further with every wash rather than wearing out. Each fish is hand-embroidered in warm mustard-gold with a fine grey-and-white body detail, catching light differently depending on the angle. A green leaf-vine border runs the full length of the stole, hand-stitched to match the density of the anchal panel below, where the same fish motif is folded into a garden scene of red, blue, and coral blooms.
