About this piece
Birds don't usually stay still long enough to be studied. On this stole, they do — wings mid-lift, caught in thread instead of flight.
Masuma Khatun stitches from her home in Bolpur, in the heart of Bengal's Kantha belt. Her hand favours movement — birds perched and mid-flight, a peacock caught turning, a deer half-hidden in grass — the kind of nakshi imagery that has travelled through generations of Bengali women's hands long before it had a market name. Every figure on this piece was placed by eye, not traced from a printed guide.
The base is soft, hand-loomed cotton in warm ivory. Across the field, pink and blue birds rest on hand-stitched branches — no two positioned quite alike. The anchal opens into a fuller scene: a tree of life, two peacocks, a grazing deer, rendered entirely in the traditional Kantha running stitch using fine cotton thread. A turquoise border, hand-finished at the edge, frames the whole piece and keeps the eye moving from bird to branch to tree.
