About this piece

One tree, grown entirely by hand. Every branch, leaf, and bird on this stole exists because a needle put it there — nothing printed, nothing repeated by machine.
THE STORY
Masuma Khatun worked this piece in Bolpur, choosing the jibon gaach — the tree of life — a motif that runs deep through Bengali Kantha tradition. In village households, the tree of life was never just decoration. It stood for family continuing forward: roots holding the past, branches reaching for what comes next, birds resting mid-journey. Older women stitched it into wedding cloths and heirloom quilts as a quiet wish for a family that keeps growing. Here, that same tree spreads across the full length of the stole — trunk, branches, birds, and blossoms, all in a single restrained shade of grey against soft ivory.
THE CRAFT
The base is soft, breathable cotton in warm ivory. What sets this piece apart is density — Masuma has covered nearly the entire surface in fine grey Kantha stitching, leaf after leaf, without a single printed guideline. Working in one colour is, if anything, harder than working in many: every shape has to hold its own weight through stitch texture alone. A slim tonal border, hand-finished, closes the edge without competing with the tree.
